The Supreme Executive Committee of Lent Madness congratulates Harriet Tubman for winning the 2020 Golden Halo. Harriet became the 11th saint to wear the highly coveted crown by defeating the always-inspiring and statuesque runner up, St. Joseph. She joins previous Golden Halo winners George Herbert (2010), C.S. Lewis (2011), Mary Magdalene (2012), Frances Perkins (2013), Charles Wesley (2014), Francis of Assisi (2015), Dietrich Bonhoeffer (2016), Florence Nightingale (2017), Anna Alexander (2018), and Martha of Bethany (2019).
What’s nearly as important as announcing the Golden Halo winner? Sharing the Lentorium link to the winner’s swag! Be the first one on your block to order the official Harriet Tubman 2020 Golden Halo mug. Your brand new mug will ship later this spring in plenty of time for you to serve your friends warm beverages (from a safe distance and without touching anything).
Want to nominate a saint for Lent Madness 2021? Tim and Scott will be opening up the week-long nomination process (aka Nominationtide) in the coming weeks. Stay tuned!
Finally, blessings to all as we head into the Triduum and enter into the death and resurrection of our Lord. It’s been a privilege to have you join us on our Lenten pilgrimage. Stay safe out there, folks, and know that you remain in our prayers.
Congrats to Harriet. And congrats to all the saints.
Congrats to the wonderful bloggers for helping us through a particularly difficult Lent. Many thanks for your generosity and loving service.
Congratulations to Harriet Tubman for winning this year’s Golden Halo! But isn’t there one more battle?

Thank you to everyone for your kind words about the memes and my Holy Week reflection – the link to which I will post one last time. My intent is to always provide some joy and a chuckle to see us through this penitential time. As most of you know by now, Palm Sunday services hit me pretty hard, but reflecting on it is helping me get through this troubling time. I expect further reflecting might be necessary as our isolation continues. Have a blessed Easter everyone.

OH MY! I fully agree. We need a face off at the SEC HQ!
I’m pretty sure that’s EVERY day over on Twitter. Thanks, for all the bonus humor this year!
You’d have my vote, but mainly because, unlike Scott, you follow me on Twitter.
Ha Ha. That would be an epic showdown. Thanks for the meme-ories!
Thanks so much, Michael, for your wit and just enough snarkiness to make it madness. I hope your theatre company survives the pandemic and you will get to finish “Something Rotten” eventually. Happy Easter!
It has been such an enjoyment to be a part of this! Some very difficult and interesting choices and once again, I have learned quite a bit about each saint.
Please take care, stay safe.
A big CONGRATULATIONS to Harriet Tubman as the 2020 Golden Halo winner. When I saw her name on the list of nominees, I had already made up my mind that Harriet would wear the Halo. Another exciting Lent Madness.
Hurray for Harriet and all the saints, and for Lent Madness! I have learned a lot. Question about those golden halo winner mugs: Are they microwave safe?
The race was tight when I voted. What was Harriet’s final winning percentage?
yes I would like to know that as well
You can always find the percentages on the Bracket tab. Harriet 56% to Joseph 44%
I had thought it would come down to Hildegard v. Joseph and Joseph would win; but I’m delight that Harriet is THE ONE!
Faith and bravery! Bravo Harriet- I’d be happy to have my coffee with you!
I love Lent Madness – particularly this year as we are staying home. I picked Harriet from the first.
She is an amazing person. Thanks to all who provide this very fun as well as instructive activity each Spring. The humor was most welcome during these surreal times. Thanks a million!
Thank you for the wonderful and engaging lent madness it went by so fast but it was as always the best time to have during our journey through lent. Looking forward to next year
Why don’t we have an Advent Madness?
Thank you so very much for this fun, enlightening, and diverting Lent Madness season. Wishing you a blessed Holy Week and a joyful Easter. Yea, Harriet!
I voted for the two of them right to this difficult pairing at the end. Because of St. Joseph’s guidance and protection of our beloved Saviour and His Mother, I chose to stick with St. Joseph.
Also, he has been chilling in my Vermont front yard this winter, contributing to the sale of my home.
I really enjoyed the whole process of Len Madness this year…especially as I was/am sequestered at home. Carry on !
Cayuga County’s own Saint! For decades her amazing story seemed to reside locally in CNY and MD. Wonderful that she has been getting more & more national attention in recent years. And now. .. this! Hooray for Harriet, and All the Saints!
I am sorry Joseph did not win. I notice only one other Biblical person has won the Golden halo.
actually 2,Mary Magdalene and Martha of Bethany
I agree that social justice seems to trump the Bible. Maybe because the world is less biblical and more secular. Our school systems all teach about Harriet but not about Joseph or others in the Bible.
Social justice IS biblical! A blessed Holy Week and Joyous Easter to you
Deborah Brennan, Social Justice doesn’t trump the Bible, it IS the Bible! And if the schools taught the Bible, they’d also have to teach the Q’ran, the Tanakh, the Buddhist scriptures, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, the Seven Teachings, and the sacred writings of allthe world religions. We do not live in a Christian-only world. To believe so is to limit God.
Thank you, Rene. Spot on. See you next year for more of your wisdom. Stay safe and well.
I have greatly enjoyed your posts throughout this Lent Madness 2020. Stay home, stay safe, stay well, St.Cecilia. The Life you save may be your own. Have a blessed Triduum and a joyful Day of Resurrection! Jusqu’a l’annee prochaine.
St C!
If you can see my email – send me a note – I’d love to keep in touch!
Modern times call for modern saints. Their witness is the same, however. Don’t worry about it too much!
I agree. The minute I saw Harriet in the lineup, I knew she would win, and although I did vote for her in at least one round myself, the predictability of it all was a bit disappointing for me. But I’ve really enjoyed the excellent writeups and the comments, both thoughtful and more lighthearted.
Congratulations Harriet! But difficult choices throughout the entire Madness. And isn’t madness always difficult anyway? My first time to participate and what fun! Plus I met some saints I had no idea of. I think you should put together an 8 pack of mugs that include the last several years of Golden Halo winners including Harriet for 2020. We will eventually be sitting down together, not at 6 foot distances to drink coffee, chow down cookies, and toast the saints who keep praying for us.
Yay Harriet!
Anna Alexander mug not working in Lentorium—already out?
What a glorious time this has been, as Lent Madness eased the stress of global madness! Many thanks to all who made this year’s extravaganza. Looking forward to 2021!
I seesawed back and forth between the two finalists, because it was one of the toughest choices I’ve had to make. I’m overjoyed to see Harriet Tubman on this year’s Golden Halo coffee mug. It is timely, given that today’s headlines are about how Covid-19 is infecting the African American community so severely. May we continue to pray with her and follow her good example in working for the health of this community and all others.
Given the circumstances of 2020… Lent Madness was especially … hmmm … Special! Thanks.
Enjoy trolling Episcopalians for Easter, Pentecost, Advent, and Epiphany. Say hi to Francis!
This has been a wonderful adventure. Thank you!
Congratulations Harriet Tubman! You are my SheHero! May you wear the Golden Halo proud. I really enjoyed participating in this years Lenten Madness, I also enjoyed Tim and Scott’s blog they are very funny.
I shared Lenten Madness with a few friends, next year I hope to share with more people especially my church family.
This is my second year playing and I finally gained an understanding of how it works.
Until next year. Be safe and stay healthy!
It was a difficult choice between two worthy contenders. Can’t we give Joseph a Silver Halo, as has been done in the past?
Smashing idea!!!!
I’d buy a Joseph mug!
Great idea for Silver Halo to St Joseph.
Here! Here! I agree! St. Joseph for the Silver Halo!
Thank you for Lent Madness. It helped through this difficult time.Have a blessed Maundy Thursday. #dioceseofNewark
Thank you SEC, bloggers and all the commenters for another wonderful Lent Madness. We didn’t know when it started how drastically our world would change over the 6 weeks and how dearly needed this would become. Be well Lent Madness faithful.
I missed a few, letting emotion get in the way of rational thinking, but I am very pleased with this year’s result!
Having studied her for years this is a truly wonderful American hero.
Only in recent years has she come to more promince.
Once again Lent Madness has both enlightened and entertained us with saints we’ve never heard of (OK, of whom we’ve never heard), people we didn’t knew were “official”saints, and well-known saints. Once again it’s been a wild ride, and this time it’s been in the middle of the 21st century equivalent of the bubonic plague. Thank you, SEC. Thank you, Celebrity Bloggers. Thank you, fellow Lent Madness followers. Be well and have a blessed Triduum.
I must confess 2019 Lent Madness was definitely tarnished and very nearly thought about bailing.
This year has been a remarkably positive and entertaining experience.
Well she did have a movie last year! Joseph still isn’t agile with social media.
LOL! I thought about the possible influence of Harriet’s movie, as well, though I haven’t seen it yet. Wonder if it’s on Netflix yet? Would be a good way to use some socially-distant time at home.
Tim and Scott, you all are amazing, gave us a great run this year as always, and your celebrity bloggers were awesome as well. Thank you for a ray of sunshine for so many days! Blessings to you all.
Loved doing Lent Madness, as always! Thank you, bloggers, and thank you, Revs. Tim and Scott for your wry commentary. Kudos to Harriet Tubman! And thank you to Brother Lawrence, who helps us to remember to thank God for the mundane, the everyday, the tedious, and to the blogger who advocated for him. Stay healthy, one and all!
I was pretty sure it would come down to Harriet and Joseph. I can’t imagine anyone else on the list beating either of them…and I was pretty sure Harriet would win. Hopefully Joseph will get another chance…he was pretty amazing in the strength of his faith and he is so often overlooked and treated as peripheral.
Thanks SO much for another Lent Madness–appreciate your initial idea, time, work, creativity & humor so much, Tim & Scott, the Celeb. Bloggers & all the staff! Stay safe & in good health!
Thank you all for holding up the Saints during this Lentiest of Lents. I look forward to a COVID free 2021 Lent. God bless from Toronto.
Think the result was influenced by a very USA base of the electorate, rather than a reflection of a broader Christian base. Very interesting . . .
You may be right, although the fact that Harriet was depicted wearing the colors of our flag in the Harriet vs. Hildegard round pushed me (a voter in the USA) in the direction of Hildegard. I did not want Lent Madness to be about parochial worldviews.
https://www.lentmadness.org/2020/04/harriet-tubman-vs-hildegard-of-bingen/
So happy this 2020, that my second visit to lent madness ‘and I have picked the two winners! Hip hip horray! I have learned a lot spiritually, emotionally, and a lot about my own strengths and finding my voice! Something a lot of women do not realize that they are important, not just as mothers and feeders, but, we do have a brain, thoughts and feelings! On another note, I have been trying to order the two mugs for 2019 & 2020, cannot seem to finalize my order, but I will persevere!
Thank you and praise for all involved in this madness and for me personally, the work put into this very special Lenton Study! Be safe, social distancing is the only way to stop, the spread of this deadly virus!
Happy 2020 Easter from afar, and I pray we all can celebrate together in 2021! On a personal note, I will be 77 years young Easter Sunday 2020my husbands Gary Anthony will be the only one singing HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!
Happy birthday. Many happy returns.
Happy Birthday from Michigan!
Happy Birthday, Sharon.
Happy birthday. My mother was born on Easter Sunday but it nevrr fell on it again. So celebrate one for mom
My daughter was also born on Easter and it has recurred at least once. Her birthday is now Earth Day every year.
Happy birthday! Enjoy the day!
Be sure to let Michael Curry (the Presiding Bishop) know that his prediction was right-on!
Happy birthday, Sharon! Happy Easter! Take good care of yourself!
Thanks, SEC, and Celebrity Bloggers for the most exciting, evocative and moving writing I’ve read throughout any Lent Madness season. Miguel’s write up of Hildegard still echoes in my head and heart. Everyday brought a smile, a chuckle, and an education in the wide variety and depth of people to strive to do good in their everyday lives. I’ve loved all the comments as well and am happy to have you all included in my social distancing circle. Happy Easter, all! See you next year!
Goodbye, friends! See you next year. Stay safe—wear your masks—wash your hands—keep apart. I will miss y’all and this daily conversation. Thank you, Scott and Tim!
Stay safe and well, Miss Susan. Love you.
And that’s a wrap on yet another fun and fabulous Lent Madness season! Many thx to Tim and Scott as well as the Celebrity Bloggers. Stay safe and healthy. A blessed Triduum to all. See y’all next year.
Thank you for helping to keep me sane during these weeks of self-isolation. Thank you for introducing me to some saints of whom I had never heard. I have a couple of saints I want to nominate for the 2021 Lent Madness, by which time, I hope, the world will be coronavirus-free. I wish everyone a blessed Triduum, and a joyful and glorious Day of Resurrection. In the meantime, stay home, stay safe, stay well. The life you save may be your own.
Wow, social media is something else, wishes from people we probably in this Life. Will Never meet! Till we meet again, thanks you ✝️❤️❤️
Thank you for this daily bit of levity in the midst of so much confusion. Looking forward to next year. I already have a candidate in mind.
This made my heart leap with joy! Yay, Harriet!
Lent Madness has been something to look forward to during this unsure time. Thanks for all of your hard work to make this a reality.
Thank you for all your hard work and efforts. I have enjoyed every Lent Madness year since the second run. [That’s when my fellow office mate told me about it.] You’ve given me all sorts of insights into people whom I had never known along with a distraction this year from the YouKnowWhat.
I would like to join with many others in this Lent Madness community in offering such thanks for the 2020 season. The celebrity bloggers were AWESOME this year — thank you all so much for your instruction and insights. I know Tim and Scott work very hard to keep this going — again, thank you both so much. And I know there are many people behind the scenes without whom this would never happen — thanks to you as well, most of whose names I have never “heard.” I was going to close by quoting the countdown clock — only ___ days to wait for LM 2021. The clock hasn’t been reset yet as I write. Oh well, I can get out my BCP and look up the date of Ash Thursday. Wait — that’s not on the movable feasts list! How is it possible? Hasta la proxima from Nicaragua.
Vaya con dios por siempre, santa Kathy.
Is this photograph retouched? I have seen this photograph numerous times, but before the left side of Tubman’s mouth did NOT turn up, but was pointing down just like the right wide of her mouth. Is this truly a different photographed, or has it been photo-shopped? If so, shame!
Thank you for Lent Madness. It was especially helpful this year whilst we are in the midst of self isolation.
Thank all of you very much for the hard work that went into Lent Madness for another year. I enjoy reading about the saints and have learned a lot! Long may the program continue. Prayers for good health all around abound. Easter blessings to all.
Sincerely, Jan Curtis
Tim and Scott, thank you for another exciting Lent Madness!!!! Now what am I going to do all day?
Joseph is a saint, she is not
I sing a song of the saints of God,
patient and brave and true,
who toiled and fought and lived and died
for the Lord they loved and knew.
And one was a doctor, and one was a queen,
and one was a shepherdess on the green:
they were all of them saints of God, and I mean,
God helping, to be one too.
They loved their Lord so dear, so dear,
and God’s love made them strong;
and they followed the right, for Jesus’ sake,
the whole of their good lives long.
And one was a soldier, and one was a priest,
and one was slain by a fierce wild beast:
and there’s not any reason, no, not the least,
why I shouldn’t be one too.
They lived not only in ages past;
there are hundreds of thousands still;
the world is bright with the joyous saints
who love to do Jesus’ will.
You can meet them in school, or in lanes, or at sea,
in church, or in trains, or in shops, or at tea;
for the saints of God are just folk like me,
and I mean to be one too.
Thank you, St. Celia.
Bravo St. Celia! Well done!
See you next year.
@Gregory of Ravenna. I am cc@hevanet.com. See you next year. Stay well!
Thank you to Fr. Tim and Fr. Scott, all the fabulous Celebrity Bloggers and the Bracket Czar for yet another inspiring Lent Madness. This is my seventh LM and it never fails to educate, inspire and uplift me. I appreciate the virtual community of all the commentators and wish all of you a most blessed Holy Triduum and a glorious Easter. Be safe and well until we meet again.
Dear Supreme Executive Committee- I have thoroughly enjoyed Lent Madness, learned about a great group of saints, and thank you. Congratulations to Harriet Tubman!
Thank you for all that you do. Love Lent Madness.
Thank you Tim and Scott for another wonderful season! Especially meaningful this year in such a strange time for our world. LM 2021 seems so far away… you will be missed!
Congratulations Harriet! Thank you to Tim and Scott, all the Celebrity Bloggers, the Bracket Czar, Maestro Shiloh Roby, the staff at Forward Movement, Sr. Diana Doncaster, Michael W, all the Saints, the Lent Madness Global Playing Community and Commentariat-this year’s Lenten journey has been especially meaningful. A Blessed Triduum and Glorious Easter to all! Stay safe and well!
I want to thank all my new computer friends and for the wishes you have sent for my 77th! EASTER SUNDAY, God Bless, keep safe, be kind, and continue in our Faith of Who is in Charge of all of us!
Still trying to get over the sudden passing of our 56 year old niece last Sunday! I can hear you a lot of our friends and family have passed with this a Covid-19, but Susan had just come thru stem cell therapy and it was working and was transferred to another hospital and put in Isolation to keen, her safe , well 2 weeks later a Blood clot from her leg sent straight to her lungs!
My father a WW11 Juno Survivor always told my brother and I — it is printed on our foreheads when we will come and when we will leave this place we called home, to go HOME with HIM!✝️
This was the first season I didn’t receive the voting by email. I tried and tried to get on the email list by clicking on the page to sign up for emails but it didn’t work. I just now (4/11) put in my email on the subscribe link so I hope it works. I missed several days because I forgot to log in. Anyway, thanks for your work and humor–always a wonderful Lenten experience.
